Al-Ansar Won, Tadamon Sour Failed to Achieve
the Unthinkable.
(May 10, 99)
Mohamed Jawad, a terrific opportunist striker in the makings, netted
two goals in a 12-minute spell to shot his club Al-Ansar to orbit.
Al-Ansar proved to be too good for their hosts of the day, notching
all 3 points despite having an unconvincing display by their usual high
standards.
With only 2 weeks to go, the reigning defending championsd a 4-point
gap over their nearest title challengers Safa, following a narrow (2-1)
away victory over third-place side, Tadamon Sour.
With the current season reaching its climax, all clubs are desperately
looking for points, at the expense of good showing. This game was no exception,
both sides failing to deliver the goods for the fans who packed the stadium,
and without the 3 goals being scored, nothing else deserved to be mentioned.
But who really cares in Al-Ansar camp? Three very, very precious points
were claimed by the narrowest of means, and that's away from home, in Tyre
exactly, which proved quite a hard venue to maneuver for all other first
division's opponents.
Al-Ansar's upcoming match against Safa is restricted to a simple mission
f
or the 10-times reigning league champs: They only need a draw, to set
a new world record of 11 consecutive league championship medallists. “Jamais-vu”
(unprecedented) till now in world soccer.
Tadamon Sour was at the image of their striker Haytham Zein: Brilliant
performers at the start, but faded when it mattered most -- after taking
the lead.
Zein, very closely marked by Al-Ansar defenders, was substituted later
in the game, after failing to produce the same input generated two weeks
ago during his side's (3-1) home victory over Safa.
At the end of the day, the vastly-experienced side notched all 3 points,
at the expense of an enthusiast, yet naive selection, particularly in the
defensive department of their game.
The home side went one-nil up in only the 9th minute: Haytham Zein collected
a through ball on the right flank of Al-Ansar's field, provided the advanced
Ali Hawila with a beautiful pass to set him up against only the opposite
keeper to beat, easily done by the home forward, lashing a right-foot drive
into the net.
Surprisingly enough, Tadamon went on the defensive, to allow much room
to maneuver for the visiting side. From then on, the expected scenario
took place;
A free-kick played from just the center half by Kevork Guarbetian was
headed down by the giant center-forward Peter Prospar in the 34th minute,
only for Mohamed Jawad -left completely unmarked- to nod in from a close-range
volley, on the right side of the advanced keeper.
At the stroke of half time, the visitors took the lead for the first
time, thanks to Henry Ikobo -their liveliest player throughout the game-
who sent a pin-point cross to Mohamed Jawad who scored from a glancing
header over the keeper, to send his side to the locker rooms with a (2-1)
lead.
The game resumed after the interval at a pacy tone, the home side were
denied the equalizer in the 59th minute, after the brilliantly-curled free
kick of Haytham Zein from 20 yards out ricocheted off the right post with
the keeper a standing spectator.
At the other end, Mohamed Jawad saw his fierce volley going inches off
the crossbar in the 61st minute, following a state-of-the-art cross by
skipper Jamal Taha.
The only two clear-cut opportunities in the remainder of the encounter
fell to Al-Ansar: Peter Prospar heading wide from a close range in the
73rd minute, and substitute Malek Hassoun's thunderous volley in the 79th
minute screamed just behind the top-left corner of the opposite goal.
Peter Prospar was harshly guarded and fouled every time he touched
the ball, nevertheless he succeeded in blessing Al-Ansar's first goal,
and attracted the defenders enough to allow his fellow players to cause
enough threat on Tadamon's goal.
