Al-Ansar in Driving Seat...Third Time Lucky for Them?
(July 31, 99)

The much-acclaimed "Beqaa Invitational Tournament" has a regular finalist for the third consecutive time, in the shape of Lebanon's League and Cup champions Al-Ansar, who squeezed through to the final showpiece following a hard-fought encounter with Jordan's Al-Wahadat.

The all-important goal came in the 40th minute, thanks to a fierce right-footed shot from all-round midfielder Naji Al-Husseini who drove a screamer past the stranded Jordanian keeper Nasser Ghandour from 12-yard out, following a free-kick just inside the penalty box accurately judged by Tobagan star Peter Prospar which hit the far post.

The victorious Lebanese side has to thank their promising young talented keeper Sultan Qassem who made a string of acrobatic saves, notably in the second period, to deny the visitors some clear-cut goal opportunities.

Al-Wahadat dictated their game to their hosts throughout the first half hour with finesse and ease, but terribly lacked lethal finishing up-front by the striking duo Marwan Shemali and Firas Ouaini, the early injury of veteran midfielder Mounir Abou Hantash never helping their cause, after being stretched off field following a direct collision with Naji Al-Husseini.

Al-Ansar formula of winning today looks like that: Scoring a goal more than the opponents.

Capitalizing on a firm and tight defensive line, the side seems heading towards yet another third consecutive trophy in this tournament, but could this scheme of play prove successful next Sunday against battling Syrian side Al-Wahda?
