Al-Ansar End Another Amazing League Campaign
With an Expected Victory.
(May 24, 99)
Al-Ansar v Al-Burj: 2-0.
Scorer: Ahmed Jradi (37'; 64').
"Beirut Municipality Stadium". Sunday 23/05/1999. 5:00pm. 22nd Week.
It was rather a training session, a gala match, opposing reigning league
champions Al-Ansar at home to minnows Al-Burj who were dropped last week
to the second division.
The home side fielded their second-choice team, with only Fadi Hallaq
and fit-again Naji al-Husseini playing as starters, with the club's managerial
department having all the eyes focused on next Sunday's FA Cup final showpiece
with Homenmen.
As for the visitors, handicapped with the ban of 6 first-team choice
players, they opted to give the chance for their youngsters to display
their talents in a fixture having no repercussions on the final standings
of both opponents of the day.
Ansar,
as expected, run out victorious by two goals without reply, both netted
by star-of-the-show, striker Ahmed Jradi.
The first one came in the 37th minute, Jradi capitalizing on a fedensive
blunder to nod home from a close range past the keeper Moussa al-Annan,
just one minute after being denied by the crossbar from a clear-cut opportunity
to break the deadlock.
Jradi consolidated the scoreline in the 64th minute, courtesy of a glancing header
while being left unmarked at the far post, following an accurate corner
delivered by substitute midfield schemer Malek Hassoun.
Peter Prospar was called to action in the 50th minute, but failed to
increase his tally of goals scored this season, to end as second-best on
the top scorers charts with 13 goals, 2 adrift of Haytham Zein who went
unnoticed during his club's yesterday's (1-0) home defeat by Akha-Ahly
of Aley.
With 14 wins, 6 draws and 2 defeats, Al-Ansar have extended their lead
over runners-up Safa to a massive 10-point mark, ending with 48 points,
to Safa's 38.
